A garbage disposal lasts 8 to 15 years. Builder-grade units land near 8; heavier-duty models with stainless grind components reach 12 to 15. What you feed it and whether you run water with it matter at least as much as the brand.
What Wears a Disposal Out
Grease. It goes in liquid and cools to a solid inside the chamber and the drain line, coating the impellers and slowing the motor.
Fibrous and starchy scraps. Celery, corn husks, onion skins, potato peels, and coffee grounds wrap around the impellers or turn to paste. Bones and fruit pits chip the grind ring.
Running it dry. Water carries the ground waste out. Without it, the chamber packs, the motor overheats, and the reset trips. Run cold water before, during, and 15 seconds after.
Corrosion. Cheaper units have galvanized grind chambers that rust in Houston’s humidity and hard water. Stainless chambers do not.
Age of the seal. Every disposal has a seal between the motor and the grind chamber. When it wears out, water reaches the motor and the unit leaks from the bottom. That is the end.
Signs It’s Time
- Leaking from the bottom of the unit. The internal seal has failed. Replace it.
- Frequent resets. An occasional trip after a jam is normal. Monthly means the motor is tired.
- Hums but will not spin after you have cleared it with the hex wrench and pressed reset. Seized bearings or a dead motor.
- Slow or weak grinding that leaves chunks. Dull impellers or a worn grind ring.
- Odor that survives cleaning. Waste is trapped in a corroded chamber.
- Cracked housing or visible rust at the seams.
Our garbage disposal problems guide sorts symptoms by what you hear and see, including the ones that are really a drain problem, not the disposal.

What a New One Costs
With a unit supplied by Hugo Plumbing, installation typically runs $495 to $625 depending on the model, and our disposals come with a 5- or 10-year parts-and-labor warranty, which is longer than most retail units carry. If you have already bought one, we install owner-supplied disposals too; the technician checks the unit and quotes the labor in writing after a free look. Our $30 replacement coupon applies. Details on the garbage disposal repair and installation page.
Get More Years Out of the Next One
Run cold water every time, skip grease and fibrous scraps, grind a tray of ice cubes monthly to scour the chamber, and pick a model with stainless grind components and at least a half-horsepower motor. That is the difference between year 8 and year 15.
If your disposal is grinding to a halt, call Hugo.
