# Toilet Installation and Replacement Cost in Houston: Toilet Tiers, Labor, and the Extras That Change the Price

*Published 2026-09-28 by Hugo Plumbing, Houston, TX.*

What it costs to replace a toilet in Houston as of September 2026: toilet price tiers, typical installation labor, the flange, wax ring, and shutoff extras that add to the bill, and when replacing beats repairing.

A toilet is the one plumbing replacement almost everyone eventually buys, and the price spread is wider than you'd think: the same job can be $350 or $1,500 depending on the toilet you pick and what the plumber finds when the old one comes off. Here's the Houston market as of September 2026, what's in the number, and how to decide whether you need a new toilet at all.

## Typical Houston-Area Costs (September 2026)

| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Standard two-piece toilet (1.28 GPF) | roughly $150–$350 |
| Better two-piece: comfort height, elongated, better flush | roughly $250–$500 |
| One-piece, skirted, or designer models | roughly $400–$1,000+ |
| Bidet toilets and integrated washlet seats | roughly $800–$3,000+ |
| Installation labor (sound flange, no surprises) | roughly $150–$350 |
| New wax ring, bolts, and supply line | included in a proper install |
| New shutoff valve | roughly $75–$200 extra |
| Flange repair or replacement | roughly $150–$500 extra |
| Subfloor repair (rotted from a long-leaking seal) | varies; carpentry |
| Haul-away of the old toilet | often included; ask |

Put together, a standard replacement commonly lands around **$350 to $800**, a premium one **$800 to $1,500 or more**. Hugo Plumbing quotes the exact price on site — the visit is free — and our **$30 Any Replacement coupon** applies.

## What Changes the Price

**The toilet.** Most of the spread. A reliable, well-reviewed 1.28-gallon-per-flush two-piece from a major brand does the job for most homes. You pay more for one-piece designs (easier to clean), skirted trapways (hide the plumbing), comfort height, dual flush, and bidet functions.

**The flange.** The toilet bolts to a flange on the floor over the drain. If it's cracked, corroded, or set too low after a new floor went in, it has to be repaired or replaced before a new toilet will seal. This is the most common surprise, especially on older Houston homes with cast iron flanges.

**The shutoff valve.** Old multi-turn valves that haven't been closed in 20 years often won't close, or leak when they finally do. Replacing it with a quarter-turn valve is cheap insurance and usually done at the same time.

**Rough-in.** The distance from the wall to the drain, usually 12 inches. A 10- or 14-inch rough-in narrows your toilet choices and can cost more.

**Subfloor damage.** A wax ring that's been leaking for years rots the subfloor. If the floor is soft around the toilet, that's carpentry before plumbing.

**Owner-supplied vs. plumber-supplied.** We install either. Ours carries our warranty in addition to the manufacturer's; yours carries the manufacturer's. Either way we check it before starting, and the visit is free.

## Repair or Replace?

**Repair** when the porcelain is sound and the problem is a running tank, weak flush from a worn flush valve, a bad fill valve, a broken handle, or a leaking supply line. These are inexpensive parts, and our [running toilet guide](/blog/running-toilet-causes-and-fixes) covers the usual suspects.

**Replace** when:

- The **bowl or tank is cracked** (a hairline crack in a tank will let go eventually, usually at night)
- It **clogs constantly** and it's an early-1990s low-flow design that never flushed well
- It's a **pre-1994 model** using 3.5 to 5 gallons per flush; a modern 1.28 GPF toilet cuts that by two-thirds and flushes better
- **Repairs are stacking up** and the parts inside are all the same age
- You want **comfort height** or a bidet

A toilet that gurgles, backs up when the washer runs, or drains slowly along with other fixtures is usually not the toilet at all — that's a drain or sewer line issue. See [toilet repair](/services/toilet-repair) for what we check, and [sewer line warning signs](/blog/sewer-line-problems-in-houston-warning-signs) for the bigger picture.

## What a Proper Install Includes

1. Water off, tank drained, old toilet pulled, old wax cleaned off the flange
2. Flange inspected; repaired or replaced if needed, at a price you approve first
3. New wax ring (or waxless seal), new closet bolts, toilet set and leveled without rocking
4. New supply line and, if needed, a new quarter-turn shutoff
5. Caulked at the base per code, leaving a gap at the back so a future leak shows
6. Fill and flush tested, seal checked, old toilet hauled away

A toilet that rocks, or one set on a bad flange, is a leak that rots the subfloor for years before you see it. The install matters more than the toilet.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much does it cost to replace a toilet in Houston?

As of September 2026, a straightforward toilet replacement in the Houston area commonly runs about $350 to $800 installed for a standard toilet, and $800 to $1,500 or more for a premium, one-piece, comfort-height, or bidet-style model, with the toilet itself making up most of the difference. A rotted flange, a corroded shutoff, or subfloor damage adds to the labor. Hugo Plumbing quotes the exact price on site, for free, and its $30 replacement coupon applies.

### How much is labor to install a toilet?

Plumbers in the Houston area commonly charge roughly $150 to $350 in labor to remove an old toilet and set a new one on a sound flange with a new wax ring and supply line. Flange repair, a new shutoff valve, or hauling away the old unit can add to that. Hugo Plumbing prices the whole job flat, labor and materials, in writing before starting.

### Should I repair or replace my toilet?

Repair it if the bowl and tank are sound and the problem is a flapper, fill valve, flush valve, handle, or supply line, which are inexpensive parts. Replace it if the porcelain is cracked, it clogs constantly because of an old low-flow design, it is a pre-1994 high-water-use model, or repairs are adding up. A modern 1.28-gallon-per-flush toilet flushes better and cuts water use.

### Can I supply my own toilet and have a plumber install it?

Yes. Hugo Plumbing installs owner-supplied toilets; the technician checks the model and the rough-in first, and quotes the labor in writing. A toilet you supply is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty; one we supply is covered by ours as well.

### What is a comfort-height or ADA toilet and does it cost more?

A comfort-height (or chair-height) toilet has a bowl rim about 17 to 19 inches from the floor instead of the standard 15, which is easier to sit on and stand up from. They cost slightly more than standard-height models in the same line and install the same way.
