# Sewage Backup in Your House: What to Do First, What Not to Do, and Who to Call

*Published 2026-09-28 by Hugo Plumbing, Houston, TX.*

Sewage backing up into a tub, toilet, or floor drain? What to do in the first 10 minutes, how to tell a main-line blockage from a single clog, what not to flush or pour, health precautions, and how Houston plumbers fix it for good.

There's no gentle way to describe it: sewage coming up through a tub drain, a floor drain, or a toilet that won't stop rising is one of the worst things that can happen inside a house. It's also fixable, and what you do in the first ten minutes decides whether this is a nasty afternoon or a gutted bathroom. Here's the order of operations.

## First 10 Minutes

### 1. Stop all water use — the whole house

This is the single most important step and the one people skip. Every drain in your home shares the main sewer line. If that line is blocked, the shower upstairs, the washing machine, and the kitchen sink all drain to the same place: your floor. Tell everyone in the house: **no flushing, no faucets, no laundry, no dishwasher** until the plumber says otherwise.

### 2. Get people and pets out of the area

Sewage carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and a backed-up bathroom can build up sewer gases. Close the door, open a window if there is one, and don't run the air conditioner if its return pulls air from that room.

### 3. Find the cleanout

Most Houston homes have a **sewer cleanout** — a capped pipe, usually 3" or 4", sticking up a few inches from the ground near the foundation, often on the side of the house nearest the street or the bathrooms. Look at it. If wastewater is standing in it or has pushed the cap off, the blockage is in the main line **downstream** of that point, between the house and the street. Carefully removing the cap can also relieve pressure and let the backup drain into the yard instead of your tub — unpleasant, but far better than the alternative.

### 4. Don't pour anything down the drain

No chemical drain cleaner, no boiling water, no enzyme treatment. Chemical cleaners don't clear main-line blockages, they sit in the standing water, and the plumber who arrives an hour later has to work in caustic sewage. It makes the job slower and more dangerous.

### 5. Call a plumber

This is an emergency-grade call, and a reputable company treats it as one. Hugo Plumbing answers 24/7 at (713) 409-7176. Tell the dispatcher which fixtures are backing up and what the cleanout looks like — it helps the technician bring the right equipment.

## Main Line or Single Drain? How to Tell

| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| One sink or tub backs up; everything else drains fine | Local clog in that fixture's branch — a [drain cleaning](/services/drain-cleaning) call, not a crisis |
| Flushing a toilet makes the tub or shower gurgle or fill | Main-line blockage; waste is finding the lowest exit |
| Running the washer sends water up a floor drain or into the shower | Main-line blockage |
| Several drains slow, toilets gurgling, sewer smell | Main line partially blocked — about to be fully blocked |
| Sewage standing in the exterior cleanout | Main line blocked between the cleanout and the city tap |
| Backup only during heavy rain | City main surcharging, or groundwater entering a cracked line |

## What the Plumber Will Do

1. **Clear the line.** A main-line cable machine through the cleanout (or roof vent) cuts through roots, wipes, and grease to get things flowing. For heavy grease or scale, hydro jetting scours the pipe wall.
2. **Camera the line.** Once it drains, a [sewer camera inspection](/services/sewer-camera-inspection) shows *why* it backed up — tree roots, a collapsed section of cast iron or clay, an offset joint from soil movement, a belly holding debris, or a wad of [flushable wipes](/blog/flushable-wipes-clog-sewer-lines-houston). This step is what separates fixing the problem from renting relief until next time.
3. **Quote the repair, if one is needed.** Roots can often be managed with periodic cutting. Breaks, collapses, and offsets need a spot repair or a replacement — see [sewer line repair](/services/sewer-line-repair) and our [sewer line repair cost guide](/blog/sewer-line-repair-cost-houston). The price is written and approved before any digging.

## Why Houston Homes Back Up

- **Tree roots.** Live oaks, pecans, and sycamores follow the moisture at pipe joints. [Tree roots in sewer lines](/blog/tree-roots-sewer-lines-houston) is our most common main-line cause.
- **Cast iron and clay pipe.** Homes built before the mid-1970s often have cast iron under the slab that's now rusted rough and narrow, or clay tile outside with joints roots love.
- **Clay soil movement.** Houston's soil swells and shrinks with the weather, pulling joints apart and creating low spots.
- **Wipes, grease, and paper towels.** "Flushable" is a marketing word.
- **City main surcharge.** During heavy rain the public system can back up. If it happens to you repeatedly, ask about a **backwater valve**, a one-way check on your line that stops the street from flowing into your house. It's one of the items on our [hurricane season plumbing prep](/blog/hurricane-season-plumbing-prep-houston) list.

## Cleanup and Insurance

Photograph everything before anyone cleans. Hard surfaces can be disinfected; carpet, padding, and drywall that were soaked in sewage generally have to come out, and for anything beyond a small bathroom floor a **restoration company** is the right call — our technician can recommend one. Check whether your policy has a *water/sewer backup endorsement*; most standard Texas policies don't cover backups without it. Keep the plumber's invoice and the camera footage for the claim.

## Keeping It From Happening Again

Get the camera footage and understand the cause. Cut roots on a schedule if that's the issue, or fix the break so they stop coming in. Stop flushing anything but toilet paper. Keep grease out of the kitchen sink. Know where your cleanout is *before* the next time. And if your line is cast iron from the 1960s, start planning — it's not a question of whether, but when.

Hugo Plumbing clears main lines around the clock, cameras the line so you know what you're dealing with, and quotes any repair in writing before we start. If your drain won't go, call Hugo.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What should I do if sewage is backing up into my house?

Stop using water everywhere in the house immediately: no flushing, no showers, no dishwasher or washing machine, because every gallon you send down ends up on the floor. Keep people and pets out of the affected area. Check your exterior cleanout; if sewage is standing in or coming out of it, the blockage is in the main sewer line. Then call a plumber. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a backed-up line.

### How do I know if it is a main sewer line clog or just one drain?

If only one fixture is backing up and everything else drains normally, it is a local clog in that fixture's branch line. If the lowest fixtures in the house, typically a tub, shower, or floor drain, back up when you flush a toilet or run the washer, or if several drains gurgle and drain slowly at once, the blockage is in the main line that every drain shares. Sewage standing in the outdoor cleanout confirms a main-line problem.

### Is sewage backup dangerous?

Yes. Raw sewage carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and standing wastewater in a closed room can release hydrogen sulfide and methane. Keep children, pets, and anyone with a compromised immune system out of the area, avoid skin contact, wear gloves and rubber boots if you must enter, ventilate, and do not run the HVAC system with the return air pulling from the affected room. Porous materials such as carpet, padding, and drywall that were soaked usually need to be removed by a restoration company.

### Does homeowners insurance cover sewage backup?

Standard Texas homeowners policies usually do not cover sewer or drain backup unless you have added a water backup or sewer backup endorsement. Check your declarations page. Either way, photograph everything before cleanup, save the plumber's invoice and camera footage, and call your carrier promptly; the plumbing repair itself is typically not covered but the resulting damage may be.

### Why does sewage back up when it rains in Houston?

Heavy rain can overwhelm the city sewer system, and if the public main surcharges, wastewater can push back toward the lowest homes on the line. It can also mean your own line has cracks or offset joints that let groundwater in, filling the pipe with rainwater until there is no room for your household waste. A camera inspection tells which one it is. A backwater valve installed on your line prevents the city side from flowing into your house.
