# How Long Does a Garbage Disposal Last? (8–15 Years, Depending on What You Feed It)

*Published 2026-09-28 by Hugo Plumbing, Houston, TX.*

A garbage disposal lasts 8 to 15 years. The signs yours is done (frequent resets, leaks from the bottom, weak grinding), what shortens its life, when repair beats replacement, and what a new one costs installed in Houston.

A garbage disposal lasts **8 to 15 years**. Builder-grade units land near 8; heavier-duty models with stainless grind components reach 12 to 15. What you feed it and whether you run water with it matter at least as much as the brand.

## What Wears a Disposal Out

**Grease.** It goes in liquid and cools to a solid inside the chamber and the drain line, coating the impellers and slowing the motor.

**Fibrous and starchy scraps.** Celery, corn husks, onion skins, potato peels, and coffee grounds wrap around the impellers or turn to paste. Bones and fruit pits chip the grind ring.

**Running it dry.** Water carries the ground waste out. Without it, the chamber packs, the motor overheats, and the reset trips. Run cold water before, during, and 15 seconds after.

**Corrosion.** Cheaper units have galvanized grind chambers that rust in Houston’s humidity and hard water. Stainless chambers do not.

**Age of the seal.** Every disposal has a seal between the motor and the grind chamber. When it wears out, water reaches the motor and the unit leaks from the bottom. That is the end.

## Signs It’s Time

- **Leaking from the bottom of the unit.** The internal seal has failed. Replace it.
- **Frequent resets.** An occasional trip after a jam is normal. Monthly means the motor is tired.
- **Hums but will not spin** after you have cleared it with the hex wrench and pressed reset. Seized bearings or a dead motor.
- **Slow or weak grinding** that leaves chunks. Dull impellers or a worn grind ring.
- **Odor that survives cleaning.** Waste is trapped in a corroded chamber.
- **Cracked housing** or visible rust at the seams.

Our [garbage disposal problems guide](/blog/garbage-disposal-problems-houston) sorts symptoms by what you hear and see, including the ones that are really a drain problem, not the disposal.

## Repair or Replace

| Situation | Answer |
|---|---|
| Under 5 years, jam or tripped reset | Repair, often on the spot |
| Leak at the sink flange or drain connection | Repair, new seal or gasket |
| Leak from the bottom housing | Replace |
| Over 8 years, motor weak or dead | Replace |
| Cracked housing or heavy corrosion | Replace |

## What a New One Costs

With a unit supplied by Hugo Plumbing, installation typically runs **$495 to $625** depending on the model, and our disposals come with a **5- or 10-year parts-and-labor warranty**, which is longer than most retail units carry. If you have already bought one, we install owner-supplied disposals too; the technician checks the unit and quotes the labor in writing after a free look. Our $30 replacement coupon applies. ## Get More Years Out of the Next One

Run cold water every time, skip grease and fibrous scraps, grind a tray of ice cubes monthly to scour the chamber, and pick a model with stainless grind components and at least a half-horsepower motor. That is the difference between year 8 and year 15.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How long does a garbage disposal last?

8 to 15 years. Builder-grade units with small motors and galvanized grind chambers land near 8; heavier units with stainless components and a bigger motor run 12 to 15. How it is used matters as much as the model: grease, fibrous scraps, and running it without water shorten the life of any disposal.

### What are the signs a garbage disposal needs to be replaced?

Water leaking from the bottom of the unit, needing the reset button more than once in a while, a motor that hums but will not turn even after clearing a jam, grinding that takes much longer than it used to, and persistent odor that cleaning does not remove. A leak from the bottom housing means the internal seal has failed and the unit is done.

### Is it worth repairing a garbage disposal?

For a unit under about 5 years old with a jam, a tripped reset, or a leak at the sink flange or drain connection, yes, those are quick fixes. For a unit over 8 years old with a bottom leak, a dead motor, or a cracked housing, replacement costs little more than the repair and comes with a new warranty.

### How much does it cost to replace a garbage disposal in Houston?

With a unit supplied by Hugo Plumbing, installation typically runs $495 to $625 depending on the model, and our disposals carry a 5- or 10-year parts-and-labor warranty. If you supply the unit, we install it after a free evaluation and quote the labor in writing first.
